Edibles 101: Dosing and Onset for Beginners
By Martin Kaufman · September 17, 2025
Edibles are a smoke-free, easy way to enjoy cannabis, but they behave differently from other formats, so a little knowledge goes a long way.
Onset is the thing to understand
Edibles are absorbed through digestion, so they can take anywhere from thirty minutes to two hours to take effect, and the experience often lasts longer than smoking or vaping.
The classic beginner mistake is taking more because nothing has happened yet, then having both doses arrive at once. Give it time. Set a timer if it helps.
Why edibles can feel stronger
There is a real reason edibles have a reputation. When you eat cannabis, your liver processes the THC and converts much of it into a related compound that is more potent than the THC you inhale when smoking or vaping. So the same amount of THC can feel noticeably stronger as an edible.
How much this affects you is very individual. It is why one person can be floored by a single “pot brownie” while another eats five and carries on with their day as though it were a Tylenol. Neither is doing anything wrong, their bodies simply process it differently. There is no way to know which one you are until you find out, so the rule is always the same: start low, give it plenty of time, and build a feel for your own tolerance before you increase.
Read the serving size, not the package
One gummy or one square of chocolate may contain multiple servings. The number on the front of the box is usually the total for the whole package, not for one piece. This catches out more people than anything else on this page.
Simple rules for a good first time
- Start low, especially your first time, and wait a full two hours before considering more.
- Eat something first. An edible on an empty stomach can arrive faster and harder.
- Do not mix with alcohol while you are still learning how it affects you.
- Give yourself an evening with nowhere to be.
- Keep edibles in their labelled packaging and well out of reach of children and pets.
That last point is not boilerplate. Edibles look like food, which is exactly why they need to be stored like medicine.
Finding your format
Low-dose options make it easy to find a comfortable starting point, and there are many flavours and formats, from gummies and chocolates to mints and beverages. If you are not sure where to begin, our team will point you at something forgiving.
