Why Cannabis Stays in Your System

Here is a question we get a lot: why can a drug test detect cannabis weeks after you used it, when alcohol is gone in a day? The answer is a genuinely interesting piece of how the body works.

Fat-soluble, not water-soluble

The short version comes down to chemistry. Alcohol is water-soluble, so your body flushes it out fairly quickly, usually within hours. THC is different. It is fat-soluble, which means the body tends to tuck it away in fat cells and release it slowly over time. That slow release is why cannabis can show up on a test long after the effects have worn off, while alcohol clears out fast.

So the lingering detection window is not a sign of anything unusual. It is just what happens with a compound the body stores rather than immediately discards.

The endocannabinoid system

Part of the reason the body interacts with cannabinoids at all is that it makes its own. The body naturally produces cannabinoid-like molecules, called endocannabinoids, and it has a whole signalling network built to respond to them, known as the endocannabinoid system. It is an active and fascinating area of scientific research.
