Open the store to every adult 21 and over

Today only medical cardholders can shop in store in Fairfax. The rule that decides that is the Town's, and the Town can change it. If you would like any adult with a valid ID welcome at the counter, here is how to tell the Council.

The Fairfax Town Council decides who may shop in store here. They read what residents send, so a short note carries weight. Whatever your view, this is how it reaches them.

How a change would happen

A change like this does not happen in a single vote. It moves through public steps over months, and what residents send in is weighed at each one.

  1. 1. The Council. The Council can direct staff to study a change and refer it to the Planning Commission.
  2. 2. Planning Commission. The Commission reviews it in its own public hearings, usually over a month or two.
  3. 3. Back to the Council. Any actual ordinance change returns to the Council later, with readings and a vote.

What would actually change

Stays exactly the same

  • The building, the location, the parking
  • Hours of operation
  • Security requirements
  • Buffer zones from schools
  • The Town's limit on how many storefronts are allowed
  • Identification checked on every visit
  • Adults 18 and over with a valid medical recommendation can shop in store
  • Nobody under 18, ever
  • The sales tax exemption for county medical cardholders

The one thing that changes

An adult 21 or older could shop in person with a valid government-issued ID, without also holding a medical recommendation. Adults 18 and over with a recommendation could still shop, exactly as they can today.

Worth knowing: under state rules an adult-use customer can buy less in a day than a medical patient can, and has fewer products available. The change would not increase what anyone takes home. It changes who may walk in.

Change a few words, add a sentence about why you care, and put your name and your Fairfax address at the bottom before you send it. A note that sounds like a person carries far more weight than a form letter, and the Council can tell the difference at a glance.

Public comment from a resident, said out loud, carries more weight than anything else on this page. You get a few minutes, you do not need to prepare anything, and saying you live here and you support it is a complete comment.

In person

Fairfax Town Council meetings are public. Cannabis items tend to sit well down the agenda, so there is no need to arrive right at the start. Check the current agenda for the date, time, and place, and fill out a speaker card when you get there.

Dial in with the number on the agenda and press star 9 to raise your hand when the item is called.

On Zoom

Join with the link on the agenda and use Raise Hand when the Mayor opens public comment.

The agenda does not give time estimates, so an item can come up any time after the meeting starts. The agenda, with the dial-in and Zoom details, posts about five business days ahead at townoffairfaxca.gov.

One more thing that helps

If you know neighbors who feel the same way, ask them to write in their own words. Twenty genuine letters land better than two hundred identical ones, and the Council has seen enough campaigns to know the difference.
